What police say happened in Lawrenceville

According to the Gwinnett County Police, officers were called to reports of gunfire around 2.30 am at a house on Brook Ivy Court.

Inside the home, police found four adults with gunshot wounds. All were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the victims were of Indian origin.

Police described the case as domestic in nature. Three young children were inside the house when the shooting took place. They were not hurt.

Investigators said the children hid together in a closet as shots were fired. One of them managed to dial 911, giving officers crucial details. Police reached the address within minutes.

When officers arrived, the suspect’s car was still in the driveway. K-9 units were deployed amid concerns the shooter could still be nearby. A police dog later tracked the suspect to a wooded area close to the house, where he was taken into custody without resistance.

The children were later handed over to a family member.

Suspect identified; charges filed

On Friday afternoon, police named the accused as Vijay Kumar, 51, from Atlanta.

He has been charged with:

  • four counts of aggravated assault
  • four counts of felony murder
  • four counts of malice murder
  • one count of first-degree cruelty to children
  • two counts of third-degree cruelty to children

The victims were identified as Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra, 43, of Atlanta, and three Lawrenceville residents, namely Gourav Kumar, 33; Nidhi Chander, 37; and Harish Chander, 38.

Investigators said an argument allegedly broke out between the couple at their Atlanta home. They then travelled with their 12-year-old child to the Lawrenceville residence, where the shooting later occurred.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
